The Shoppes at Carlsbad

If you’re a resident of Carlsbad or the surrounding areas, chances are you know about The Shoppes at Carlsbad (formerly a Westfield Mall.) Late last year, Westfield sold the property at 2525 El Camino Real to Rouse Properties. Based in New York City, Rouse Properties is considered one of the largest mall owners in the United States, with a portfolio of 36 malls under their belt. The original plan for the Westfield mall was to turn it into an open-air shopping promenade by removing the roof; however, now that the mall is under new ownership, and with the possibility of Measure 8 passing, that does not seem likely. New shops will most likely be added. Several have been shut down already either because their lease was not renewed, or because they were bought out. What we do know for sure is that Rouse stated that the new renovations will “significantly enhance the overall shopping and social experience. Improvements will include a complete interior make-over and the addition of a contemporary and engaging streetscape to accommodate high-volume restaurants, which bring together the indoor and outdoor elements.”  Improvements The addition of the plush Regal Carlsbad Theater has made the fading shopping center light up with visitors the past several months, boasting reserved stadium seating with reclining leather seats as well as other luxurious amenities. Other new additions include Panera Bread, Luna Grill, and Peet’s Coffee and Tea, bringing fresh new flavors to Carlsbad.
