How to Protect Wood

Many of the earliest wooden structures were built with wood that was allowed to fully dry out, removing a significant portion of the water content from the wood. This generally takes a pretty severe saturation of moisture within the wood to occur. But despite all of its common uses, wood is not without at least one major flaw.

Though today’s focus in preservation is almost entirely on paints and stains, it’s worth noting that early structures had no such exterior finish. This is not to reverse the effects of time and exposure to the elements, but to ensure that wooden construction is made to withstand the test of both time and the elements.
