New Bill Would Give GI Bill to Surviving Spouses

A bill has been introduced that if passed, would give spouses of fallen servicemembers the cost of public in-state tuition and fees, as well as a monthly living stipend and book allowance. This bill would fall under the Spouses of Heroes Education Act. Its goal is to provide spouses who suddenly become the sole bread winner for their family to receive assistance that will give them the education they need to take on the increased financial responsibility. Currently, spouses of deceased servicemembers can receive education benefits under the Survivors’ and Dependents’ Education Assistance program.
