Founded in 1890, Coronado is a quaint beach community along the Pacific Ocean. It is also known as Coronado Island, located 5.2 miles from downtown San Diego. It is actually a peninsula connected to the mainland via a 10 mile isthmus. Coronado is very well known for its great beaches and island feel. One of its main attractions is the Hotel Del Coronado, a historic hotel dating back to 1888. Along with the Hotel, Coronado boasts a rich history in arts and culture and displays that passion in various events throughout the year. Coronado has many military ties and history, mainly for its use as a US Navy base. Naval Air Station North Island was erected prior to WWII and is now used for aircraft and aircraft carriers. The south side of the island is known to be home to the Naval Amphibious Base Coronado which is currently used as a training center for the Navy SEALs. Despite Coronado’s military influence, it remains a very quiet city. It is home to about 24,000 residents and thousands of tourists each year due to its fine dining, shopping, and beaches. Real estate prices in Coronado have been strong for the past few decades with many retirees finding the city to call it home.
